"Trust the Process" - What the Heck Does That Even Mean?

Writer's picture: Christine GrimmChristine Grimm
When you learn to trust the process, you open yourself up to a whole new level of growth, fulfillment, and yes, even success.

Ever feel like no matter how hard you push, progress still feels out of reach? You're not alone. You're a Type-A go-getter who's used to making things happen. You set your sights on a goal and bulldoze your way through every obstacle until you achieve it. When it's time for patience or process, ain't nobody got time for that.

But here's the thing - that relentless drive to control every outcome and plow through every challenge might be doing you more harm than good. In fact, it could be the very thing holding you back.

I know, "trust the process" sounds woo-woo.  It's self-help mumbo jumbo. But hear me out.

There's real power in learning to let go a little and embrace the journey, not just the destination.

What does "trusting the process" actually mean?

It's about having the courage to be patient. It's recognizing and celebrating the small wins, allowing the people around you to make mistakes and own their results (or lack thereof), and staying adaptable when things don't go according to plan.

It's about replacing harsh self-criticism with self-compassion. It's shifting from scarcity thinking - where everything feels like a race against time - to an abundance mindset, where you trust that progress will come.

I'm not saying you need to ditch all of your Type-A tendencies. That relentless drive? It's one of your greatest strengths. The key is to know when to shift gears - when to balance the pursuit of results with a little more trust in yourself, the people around you, and the process itself. This will take you to a whole new level.

When you trust the process, you:

  • Focus on the small, daily steps instead of getting fixated on the end goal. Progress may feel slow, but it adds up.

  • Embrace the ups and downs, the twists and turns, as essential parts of growth - not just obstacles to overcome.

  • Remind yourself that your worth isn't defined by how quickly you reach the finish line, but by how you navigate the race.

  • Give yourself permission to pivot. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to adjust your approach rather than to stubbornly cling to a plan that's no longer working.

So, the next time you find yourself getting impatient, attempting to predict the unpredictable and control everything and everyone, take a deep breath. We're wired to crave instant results. But real success? It comes from trusting the process.

When you learn to trust the process, you open yourself up to a whole new level of growth, fulfillment, and yes, even success.

A Simple Challenge for You

What's one small way you can lean into trust today? Maybe it's celebrating a tiny win. Maybe it's giving yourself grace when things don't go as planned. Or it could be just pausing to breathe and reminding yourself that you're on the right track.

Whatever it is—start now.
